About this project

The Central Arkansas Library System owns a collection of 30 ink or tempura painted textiles. These textiles were painted by internees at the Japanese American Internment camp in Rohwer, Arkansas. Various substrates were used, including cotton, silk, denim and possibly cotton canvas.

What we did

Most of the pieces exhibited wrinkling, contained strong fold lines, and were slightly discolored with surface soiling. The library contracted B.R Howard to perform conservation treatments to address these issues and provide matting and framed mounted systems for exhibition. All treatments were performed in our lab then returned and installed for the client.
