About this project

The Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Syracuse, NY is approximately 75’ tall. It was constructed from 1908-1911 and was erected to commemorate the 12,265 men from Onondaga County who gave their lives in the Civil War.

BRH was hired by an architectural firm to assess the current condition of the monument and to develop conservation treatment procedures and budgetary planning for the future scope of work.

The monument has a substantial amount of biological growth covering the decorative stone carvings and reliefs. Vegetation was observed growing from numerous joints. Many of the mortar joints between the granite need to be repointed. Several cracks and areas of spalling will need to be filled and stabilized. The large bronze sculptural groupings on the East & West faces of the monument have deteriorated wax coatings which have allowed localized areas of corrosion to form across the many surfaces.

A conservation treatment plan was generated to ensure that proper materials and methodology will be used to preserve the monument.
