About this project

B.R. Howard was contracted by a national insurance company to provide an assessment of the soot related damage covering the surface of the gilding, decorative murals, and marble within a Greek Orthodox church in NY.

What we did

Analytical testing was required to determine if the soot, which sat for an extended period of time had become embedded or had crosslinked with the protective varnish layer.

Surface cleaning tests were performed to establish an appropriate cleaning approach. This was done to ensure additional damage would not occur during the conservation treatment while trying to make the project as cost efficient as possible and serve as a means for developing a realistic timeline.
