About this project

The National Park Service contracted B.R. Howard to conserve a set of golf clubs and bag belonging to President Eisenhower that were engraved with his name.

What we did

All surfaces of the clubs and leather were cleaned and surface corrosion on the iron components were reduced and stabilized.  The green copper stearate corrosion found on the zippers and rings of the gold bag were removed and a protective lacquer coating was applied. The damage leather dividing strap on the interior of the bag was replicated due to severe deterioration of the original, which was retained. The reproduction matched the original and the patterns or the original were replicated and were pressed into the new strap. Other areas of red rot were consolidated and toned to match the surrounding leather finishes. The leather pouches were humidified to remove hard folds and creases and internal mounts were inserted to provide support. A mount was constructed to hold the bag upright in the display case after the conservation treatment was complete.
