About this project

B.R. Howard was contracted by the Carlisle Episcopal Church to assess, clean, and conserve the marble alter in their church. Numerous chips, nicks, and abrasions were found over the structure. Several previous repairs had discolored and surfaces were covered by a moderate layer of grime and dirt. The discolored adhesives, loose mortar, and poorly adhered fills were removed using both solvents and mechanical techniques.

What we did

The marble surfaces were cleaned using a dilute, PH adjusted, anionic detergent solution in distilled water. Stains were reduced using poultices. The loose lower left and right side step panels were removed, cleaned, and re-installed using a lime mortar. The fills and damaged areas were repaired using a color matched lime mortar supplied by Cathedral Stone.  A full treatment report was provided to the client after work was performed.
